Legendary wine estate from a top rated vintage this masterpiece of the artistic wine expression possesses an epic history. For centuries it stood in the shadows of its neighboring Chateau Lafite, a favorite of Thomas Jefferson and British royalty, until Baron Phillipe de Rothschild personally committed to elevating the wine quality to rival its next door competitor after World War I. After hiring to best talent and massive investments over decades, Chateau Mouton demonstrated its full potential in 1973 when the French government amended the Constitution to elevate Mouton to the top tier of their quality ranking (First Growth), the only promotion since 1855. After WWII the Baron celebrated the victory by commissioning a famous artist to design a special artist label, a practice that continues to this date. The 2005 vintage yielded such a powerful wine that it became an instant legend that some named it a “vintage of the century”. The Cabernet Sauvignon dominated blend will attain its peak of enjoyability 2020 – 2060, but requires 2 + hours of decanting. Best when paired with hearty, gamey meat dishes or hearty cheeses.
