2006-Chateau Bahans Haut-Brion
Pessa-Leognan, Bordeaux, France
“Shuh-Toe Buh-UN O-Bree-yon”
This often overlooked second label of the only First Growth Grand Cru Classe chateau located outside of the Medoc region as well the only American owned top estate possess an atypical aroma profile. Unlike its northern neighbors where the muscular Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend, Haut Brion also includes a substantial amount of floral Cabernet Franc grapes. The Graves (“Gruhv” region is named after the plethora of river gravel permeating the vineyards) region displays a more stony character in the undercurrent of flavors and no “cigar box” expression (Pauillac region hallmark). Definitely more finesse driven, the texture shows more velvety and glove leather supple charm than the more athletically driven personalities of the Medoc. A traditional companion for rich and mild dishes like Beef Wellington or Stroganoff to rack of lamb or seared wild tuna, allow 1+ hour of decanting. Best 2016 – 2024.
